Why Communication Matters More Than You Think

You might be thinking: "I'm a forester. I manage forests. Communication isn't my job."

Communication isn't a nice-to-have. It's not something for the PR department — which most forestry organisations don't have anyway. Communication is a business survival skill. The cost of silence is real, measurable, and growing.

This chapter makes the business case. Not with theory. With evidence.

Regulation Is a Conversation You Weren't Part Of

The EU Deforestation Regulation applies the same due diligence regime to sustainable European forestry operations as it does to high-risk imports from regions with genuine deforestation problems.

Read that again.

European foresters — who grew their forests by 10% in thirty years, who invented sustainability three centuries ago — are now required to prove they're not destroying forests. Every shipment. Every operator. Every piece of wood.

The compliance costs are real. The paperwork is real. The burden on small forest owners is real.

How did this happen?

It happened because the conversation about deforestation took place without European foresters in the room. Environmental groups presented their evidence. Politicians listened. The public supported action. And the regulation was written for the worst case — because nobody made the case for the best case.

European forestry wasn't excluded from the conversation. It excluded itself. By staying silent. By assuming that good management would be recognised without explanation.

EUDR is the price of thirty years of poor communication.

The Agriculture Warning

European forestry is not the first industry to learn this lesson.

Agriculture went through the same crisis — and the research that came out of it should terrify every forestry professional who thinks communication doesn't matter.

The Canadian Centre for Food Integrity studied why public trust in agriculture collapsed despite decades of improving practices. Their finding was devastating: shared values are three to five times more important than demonstrated technical ability or science in building public trust.

Three to five times.

That means when a forester responds to criticism with harvest-to-increment ratios, they're using the wrong currency. The public doesn't distrust forestry because they lack information. They distrust it because they don't feel foresters share their values about nature, environment, and the future.

This explains everything. It explains why thirty years of technical reports didn't build trust. It explains why environmental groups — who lead with emotion, values, and stories — win the public conversation every time.

Lead with values. Not data. Data supports. Values connect.

The Vacuum Always Gets Filled

There's a law in communication that's as reliable as gravity: if you don't tell your story, someone else will.

For thirty years, European forestry left a narrative vacuum. No coordinated public communication. No shared messages. No response infrastructure. Nothing.

Environmental groups filled that vacuum. Efficiently. Professionally. Emotionally.

They told a story about forests in danger. About industry as the enemy. About destruction disguised as management. They told it with powerful images, simple messages, and relentless repetition.

Was the story accurate? Not entirely. Was it effective? Devastatingly so.

The result is a public that believes forests are shrinking when they're growing. That believes forestry destroys nature when it sustains it. That supports regulations designed to constrain the very people who built Europe's forests.

The vacuum got filled. Not with our story. With someone else's.

Finland: The Proof That This Works

Sceptics will say: "This sounds nice. Does it actually work?"

Yes. Finland proves it.

The Finnish Forest Association has been building communication capacity since 1877. Not as a side project. As a core function. They invest in relationships with journalists, politicians, civil society, and NGOs — through their Forest Academy programme, through regular public perception surveys, and through coordinated industry messaging.

The result: in some barometers, close to 90% positive public perception of the forest industry. In a country where environmental awareness is high and media scrutiny is intense.

Finland didn't achieve this by accident. They achieved it by treating communication as essential infrastructure. As essential as roads, seedlings, and harvesting equipment.

If Finland can do it — so can every other forestry sector on the continent.
